Pembelajaran I . Emphasize qualities and resulting effect (So ….. that, Such ….. that)
So …….. that + a
clause digunakan untuk memberikan penekanan (to express emphasis). So …….. that
yang berisikan adverb berfungsi
memodifikasi atau memberikan intensitas terhadap kata sifat atau keterangan
pada klausa utama / induk kalimat. Ekpresi tersebut diikuti oleh anaka
kalimat yang menyatakan dampak yang
tidak terduuga (expresses a surprising or remarkable effect). Pada kasus ini “that” bisa dihilangkan, dan
“very’ tidak bisa menggatikan “so”.
Cause effect
The stars was so
beautiful
that
we watched it all night.
The meteor storm
passed so quickly that it
went by in one week.
Pada dasarnya So ….that, pada kolom
kosong berisi kata sifat atau kata keterangan yang artinya begitu ….. sehingga. Penekanan
berada pada kata sifat atau keterangan yang digunakan.
Such adalah bagian
dari frase kata sifat [such + (determiner) + adjective] yang memodifikasi frase
kata benda. Ekpresi ini diikuti oleh anak kalimat (that + clause) yang
mengekpresikan efek / akibat. Such sering kali diikuti oleh kata sifat yang
didahului oleh article yang memodifikasi kata benda.
CAUSE EFFECT
It was [such a beautiful] meteor storm
that we watched it all night.
Such ….that,
pada kolom kosong berisi kata benda. Pada contoh such
a
beautiful] meteor storm that memiliki
arti sebuah meteor yang begitu indah. Penekanan ada pada meteor storm nya.
So dapat berfungsi sebagi keterangan penghubung
(a connective adverb) yang menyatakan akibat logis atau hasil dari aksi pada
kalimat utama.
CAUSE (NO EMPHASIS) EFFECT/RESULT
We heard about the full moon eclips,
so we watched the sky for them.
We became hungry, so we went to restaurant.
I saw a falling star, so
I made a wish.
